Embroidered antependium, Italy or Sicily, circa 1800
Large embroidered cream-coloured towers spun metal in guipure and guipure and enhanced with rust silk.
Decorated with a central cartouche bearing a painted coat of arms replacing the original religious
decoration; on either side, flower posts and garlands of foliage
held by confronting peacocks. Dusted, oxidized, some wear and stains.
Mounted on frame 92 x 206 cm
To be compared with a gold embroidered antependium kept in the Metroplitan Museum (no. 55.217.35) and several elements of the Sicilian liturgical vestment room well listed.
