Louis XVI at the Palace of Versailles, drawing, Indian ink and sepia wash on paper, circa 1776-
1779, H. 60 x W. 42.5 cm (at sight)
Another version of the drawing kept at the École nationale
supérieure des Beaux-Arts (inv. O 1137); a complementary drawing,
by the same hand, representing the sculpted coronation and a slope of the same canopy was on sale in gallery J. Sargos gallery in 2018.
History: a canopy project commissioned in 1776 for the reception of the knights of the Order of the Holy Spirit was
held in the Royal Chapel of Versailles; its realization was entrusted to the embroiderer Étienne-Pierre Rocher, author
of the embroideries of the Coronation of Louis XVI (11 June 1775); the drawing was probably given by Charles de
Saint-Aubin, draftsman of the king and brother of Gabriel de Saint-Aubin.
