Attributed to Charles-Germain de SAINT-AUBIN... - Lot 1 - Daguerre
Attributed to Charles-Germain de SAINT-AUBIN (1721-1786) Project of an embroidered canopy sky for the reception of the knights of the order of the Holy Spirit in the figure of Louis XVI at the Palace of Versailles, drawing, Indian ink and sepia wash on paper, circa 1776- 1779, H. 60 x W. 42.5 cm (at sight) Another version of the drawing kept at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts (inv. O 1137); a complementary drawing, by the same hand, representing the sculpted coronation and a slope of the same canopy was on sale in gallery J. Sargos gallery in 2018. History: a canopy project commissioned in 1776 for the reception of the knights of the Order of the Holy Spirit was held in the Royal Chapel of Versailles; its realization was entrusted to the embroiderer Étienne-Pierre Rocher, author of the embroideries of the Coronation of Louis XVI (11 June 1775); the drawing was probably given by Charles de Saint-Aubin, draftsman of the king and brother of Gabriel de Saint-Aubin.
