Limoges, early 18th century, workshop of Jacques II Laudun (1663-1729) Saint Vincent de Paul (1581-1660) in three-quarter bust after the model of François Simon (1606-1671), circa 1660 Polychrome painted enamel plate with gilding highlights, scrolls in relief in the spandrels; fixing holes Band in the lower part with the inscription: "VINCENT DE. PAVL PTRE, FONDATEVR AND PMIER. SVPERIEVR. GRAL DE La Congregation de la Msion". Midnight blue counter enamel with inscription on the reverse "Laudin au faubourgs / De Manigne/ a Limoges" and monogrammed "I.L". H. 21.5 x W. 16.9 cm Moulded and gilded wood frame and collection label on the reverse A few cracks in the counter-glaze The enamel production of the Laudun workshop was famous throughout the 17th century, especially under the direction of Jacques II Laudun (1663-1729). The latter maintained the tradition of the painted enamel workshops of Limoges which had flourished since the 16th century. Saint Vincent de Paul, priest and founder of the Congregation of the Mission, is represented after the portrait made by Simon François de Tours. The inscription in the band and the absence of a halo indicate that this portrait/plaque in painted enamel was made before the canonization of the churchman by Pope Clement XII in 1737.
