Jean MOULIGNON, published by DEVAMBEZ Stork... - Lot 37 - Daguerre
Jean MOULIGNON, published by DEVAMBEZ Stork Squadron Original lithograph representing the pilots of the N3, in the lead the stork wearing a Lewis machine gun, followed by its commander Antonin Brocard, then Georges Guynemer, René "Père" Dorme, Alfred Heurtaux, Albert Deulin with his dog Parasol and Mathieu Tenant de La Tour. Signed lower right in Moulignon pencil and dated 1918. 34 x 91 cm Lieutenant Jean de Moulignon, a former student of Detaille, was summoned in 1916 to the office of Major Brocard, who asked him, in exchange for a 48-hour leave, to paint a fresco on six pilots of the N3. "It was necessary to have an animal painter to sketch us, that's why we are so successful" wrote Brocard when he saw the fresco. This fresco is one of the most famous and emblematic of the French aeronautics of the Great War 1914/1918. Lithographs were made from it, of which here is a copy .
