The painting for the 1879 Salon, A Corner of Cernay in January, is the culmination of a work based on the same viewpoint. A few houses in Cernay-la-Ville and the nearby countryside covered with a thick blanket of snow are the pretext for several paintings of different sizes. If the layout of the thatched cottages, the rare plants including the bare tree in the foreground, the sky crossed by black crows are found in these paintings, the treatment of the light and especially the skies is renewed in each work. All this work, dated 1878-1879, where the painter treats the same subject in different lights, was an innovative approach at the time that would be systematically taken up by other artists in the following decades.
