Fragment of a Persian Safavid miniature Polychrome pigments and gold on paper. Iran, probably Shiraz, second half of the 16th century. Miniature 16 x 8.5 cm In the lower part, two characters are in conversation at the entrance of an imposing brick palace with rich polychrome tile decoration. A pennant at their feet indicates that the painting has been cut, and that it was probably was probably the flag of one or more horsemen marching in the lower part. In the upper part of the image, one can see figures in a pavilion conversing with women at the windows of a windows of a turret that probably constituted the female apartments of the palace, also called zenana. Behind the walls, a tall cypress and a flowering tree suggest a lush garden.
