CHARLES LOUIS LESAINT (1795- AFTER 1843) Monk... - Lot 101 - Daguerre
CHARLES LOUIS LESAINT (1795- AFTER 1843) Monk in a Gothic Church, circa 1825 Oil on canvas signed lower left Lesaint 24 x 19 cm (old restorations) Born in 1795, Charles Louis Lesaint is among the students of Charles-Marie Bouton perhaps one of those who best integrated the pre-Romantic and troubadour verve of his master. Bouton, like many painters of his time, developed a taste for ruins and churches after discovering the Museum of French Monuments created by Alexandre Lenoir in 1795. The diffusion of the Voyages pittoresques et romantiques dans l'ancienne France by Taylor and Nodier initiated in 1825, the development of archaeological publications and societies of Antiquaries, then the creation of the Inspection générale des monuments historiques in 1830, accentuated this fashion and allowed a new emulation for the painters.
