Attributed to Michel François DANDRE BARDON (1700-1785) Alexander cutting the Gordian knot Canvas. 89 x 108 cm Our painting illustrates an episode from the life of Alexander the Great, as told by Plutarch. The scene is situated after the rout of the Persians following the passage of the Granite. Arrived in the city of Gordyum, he discovers a chariot whose particularity is its linked yoke: the local tradition wanted that the universe was promised to the one who would manage to untie this inextricable knot. By cutting the knot with his sword, Alexander announced his resolution to conquer Asia (Plutarch, Life of Alexander, XXIV).
