Munich, 1640-1642. 2 volumes in-folio, [8] f., 71-447 p., [9] f. + [8] f., 48 p., [2 (out of 3 or 4?)] f., p.7-806, [12] f., fig., old half calf with corners, smooth and mute spine (rubbed headbands, a partially uncovered jaw, a worn corner, the lower cover of t.2 (headbands rubbed, one spine partly uncovered, one corner worn, bottom board of vol.2 degraded by a wetness that extends to the last 70 leaves of the volume weakened, with worms' tracery in the margins; small tear without damage on a fig. t.1 f.*4, and at the corner of another f. c2, tear without damage on p.233 and 237 t.1, worms' tracery from p.300 to the end of t.1, touching some letters and pictures without gravity; paper browned; missing 1 (or 2 ?) f. from the booklet A of t.2).
First edition of this collection of apologetic biographies of Capuchin and Franciscan religious. Rare and important reunion of the two volumes published 2 years apart. The work is illustrated with more than 180 full-page copper-engraved portraits of the said characters by the brothers Johannes Eckard and Johannes Heinrich Löffler; there are also a few other engravings, including a beautiful title-frontispiece repeated in each volume (and of which only the date changes), and a Virgin and Child.
Provenance: Seraphic Juniorate of Spy (Belgium; 19th c. stamp), then convent of the Capuchins of Dinard (France), called La Vicomté (modern stamp).
