[RUBENS]. LIUTPRAND DE CREMONE. Luitprandi Opera quae extant. Chronicon et Adversaria nunc primum in lucem exeunt Antverpiae, ex Off. Plantiniana B. Moreti, 1640. in-folio, XLVIII (including 2 engraved plates) -592 p., [20] f., woodcut letterpress mark on the v° of the last f., woodcut initials and endpapers, 5 copper-engraved figures in the text, contemporary soft parchment, handwritten title on the spine (ordinary browning to the text). Important collective edition of the works of the Italian bishop Liutprand of Cremona (c. 920 - c. 972), who carried out several embassies to Constantinople on behalf of the Lombards, and later of the Holy Roman Empire. These chronicles and memoirs are a valuable source for the diplomatic history of the tenth century. The edition is distinguished by two copperplate engravings by Cornelis Galle (Antwerp, 1576-1650) after Peter-Paul Rubens. The first is a title-frontispiece composed by the painter Erasmus II Quellin (1607-1678) under the direction of Rubens; the second offers in a medallion, in an allegorical frame, the portrait of the dedicatee, Gaspar de Guzman, Count of Olivares, after a painting by Rubens. Antique label and small armorial drystamp on the upper back cover.
