[Post-incunable]. MAFFEI (Raffaele). Commentariorum urbanorum liber primus [-XXIII]. [Rome, Johann Besicken, 1506].
[Post-incunabula]. MAFFEI (Raffaele). Commentariorum urbanorum liber primus [-XXIII]. [Rome, Johann Besicken, 1506]. In-folio, [18]-CCCXLI f., 18th c. marbled boards, handwritten title on label on the spine, old handwritten title on one edge, reused parchment endpapers (worn boards, gaps in the spine; 3 original double-edged boards remain, stitching distended; one worm sting in the margin over the whole volume; another from f.162 to the end and touching some letters; stain in margin f.75, tear without mq. in margin f.66, repair in margin f.71). Very rare first edition of the first two parts (of 3) of this encyclopedia composed by the Italian humanist Raffaele Maffei (1455-1522), known as Volaterrano, and dedicated to Pope Julius II. This volume contains books I to XII concerning geography, the first book being a table; and books XIII to XXIII dedicated to anthropology. Signs +6, ++6, §6, a6, b-x8, A-V8, X6, Y5 (of 6?). The complete work consists of 552-[12] leaves. Between the second and the third part, Edit16 points out a leaf Y6 which is missing here; probably blank, it does not appear in the only digitized copy that we have been able to consult, that of the University of Göttingen (on the enzyklothek.de website). The endpapers written in the 14th century in red and black contain extracts from canon law. Some rare and careful old annotations. Provenance: Armorial engraved bookplate "ex bibliotheca Sapt (?)"; Dominicans of Poitiers (19th c. stamp on one endpaper and repeated in the margin of 2 f.). (USTC 839511; EDIT16 46654).
