[Livre du XVIe siècle]. MISSALE ROMANUM, ex decreto sacrosancti Concilii Tridentini restitutum, Pii V Pont. Max. iussu editum. Parisiis, apud J. Kerver, 1574.
[Sixteenth century book]. MISSALE ROMANUM, ex decreto sacrosancti Concilii Tridentini restitutum, Pii V Pont. Max. iussu editum. Parisiis, apud J. Kerver, 1574. Two parts in one volume in-folio, [30]-205 f., [1] blank f.; 39-[1] f., fig, full old garnet calf, smooth and mute spine, boards and spine richly decorated with a composition of mosaic havana, fawn and cream listels, the backgrounds sown with a stippling, or decorated with gilt hatching, or covered with a decoration in small irons with mosaic fleurons of various shades, central medallion mosaic with gilt arms, gilt roulette at the edges of the coupes and counterpanes, chased, painted and gilt edges; skilful restorations (small worm work at the counterpanes, pages of the book). of worms on the back covers, pale halo in the margin of the title and the last 10 f., browning, slight soiling in the margins at the beginning of the volume, tear without missing on f. 62, small lack in the original margins on f. 182 and 185). A remarkable copy of this important Roman missal from the Council of Trent, the privilege of which was granted to the Parisian bookseller Jacques Kerver by Pope Pius V in 1570. Printed in red on two columns, the edition is amply illustrated with several hundred woodcut initials and vignettes, as well as two compositions, the Mass of St. Gregory (mid-page, fol.1 r°), and the Crucifixion (full-page, fol. 102 v°), all woodcut. The sumptuous binding of this copy was most likely made in the early 17th century, as the style of its chased edges suggests. On the other hand, its retrospective decoration of mosaic listels is related to the one in vogue in the middle of the 16th century, in the taste of the famous bindings made for the bibliophile Jean Grolier. Some of the decoration of the backgrounds with small irons was probably added later, as well as the medallion with the coat of arms, which resisted our in-depth investigations and remain unidentified. A border and castors were probably added at the time of the restorations. Sign. ã-ũ 6, A-Z 6, AA-KK 6, LL8 (the last blank), Aa-Ff 6, Gg 4. Provenance: Jean Furstenberg (1890-1982; gilt bookplate). This copy was included in an exhibition organized by the bibliophile on September 30, 1961, on the occasion of the 2nd International Congress of Bibliophile Societies. (Exhibition of Renaissance bindings. Catalog by Denise Lévy. Paris, 1961. In-4° multigraph. FRBNF33078617). (USTC 170222, locates only one copy: Houghton Libr. at Cambridge; Bohatta 1928, no. 1187 p. 202).
