[Manuscript]. [Astronomy and theology]. QUADRAN (THE) of Achas. Treatise on the Sphere. By Mr. M. M[aître?] and professor in theology in the Academy of P. S.l., s.n., 1685. Small in-8, [1] f. (title), 136 numbered pages, [1] f. (table), contemporary tan basane, spine with 5 nerves, red title-piece, ornamented caissons, spotted edges (head-cap uncovered, one corner worn, rubbing and epidermis on the boards). Manuscript most probably unpublished. Composed of fifteen chapters, it aims at proposing an explanation to the theological question of the so-called "sundial of Ahaz", an ill-defined object that appeared to the king of Judah Ezekiel, which exegetes hold to be either a staircase or a sundial. The fact remains that the sacred text mentions shadows and degrees. The author brings his contribution to the debate in his 15th and last chapter, probably in response to a request from the Academy, and entitled: "On the proposed question concerning the dial of Achas". He relies on elements of astronomy which constitute the essential part of the manuscript and earn it the subtitle of "Traité de la sphère". Let us note in particular the curious chapter 5, "On the astrological onion", comparing the vegetal structure to that of the celestial organization: "One must eat the onion, one must have eaten it to know the disposition of the world [...]".
