Large in-8, 224 p., pl., brown half-chagrin with corners, spine with 5 nerves, gilt title, gilt fillet on the covers, gilt head, parchment cover preserved, untrimmed (slight rubbing at the corners; rare freckles). Rare and unique early edition of this story, illustrated with 11 lithographic plates under captioned serpents. Limited edition of 50 numbered copies: one of the 10 first copies (n° 2) on Hollande laid paper, with the cover with painted lettering. "Bitord", an old nickname for the inhabitants of Thiers, originally pejorative, will be claimed and then rehabilitated by the people of Thiers since the Second Empire.
