François de GENTIL BAICHIS (1844-1926) The Maroussia, yacht of the Duc d'Orléans Gouache. Minor scratches. 42 x 62 cm Naturalist, explorer and writer, Louis Philippe Robert d'Orléans, Duc d'Orléans (1869-1926) was the great-grandson of of Louis-Philippe. In 1896, he married Archduchess Marie-Dorothée de Habsbourg-Lorraine (1867-1932). In the spring of 1904, the duke, duchess, their retinue and a number of Breton nobles, including general de Charrette, embarked Genoa for a cruise off the Italian coast on their yacht, the Maroussia, named after the novel by the short story by Ukrainian writer Marko Vovtchok. Also on board, writer Louis Bertrand recounts some of the details of this trip in the Revue des deux mondes (1937). Led by Commander François de Gentil Baichis (1844-1926), a brilliant officer of the Royale, the ship passed off the coast of Naples; we can make out the silhouette of Vesuvius in the background of our gouache
