Mantelpiece screen in molded and carved wood, stamped N. Q. - Lot 190
Mantelpiece screen in molded and carved wood, stamped N. Q. Foliot, Louis XV period, delivered on July 23, 1759 for the Marquise de Pompadour's apartment in the Château de Bellevue. In richly carved beech (originally gilded). Showing the number 10 in ink, preceded by two letters, most probably: du n°. 10. Associated 18th-century tapestry leaf. H. 104 W. 76 D. 41 cm Provenance: collection of Mr. D. D. Stathatos, maître Baussy sale in Cannes, Sept. 24-25, 1962, lot 112. Nicolas Quinibert Foliot received his master's diploma in 1729. This screen corresponds exactly to Nicolas Quinibert Foliot's deliveries for Bellevue under Madame de Pompadour in Pompadour in 1759. Number 10 refers to his apartment in the château. See the Journal du Garde-Meuble de la Couronne for the 1759 deliveries and the 1763 Bellevue inventory (Archives nationales O1 3317, folios 21, 22, 23, and 207, 208). The absence of the 'BV couronné' mark is also noted under the NQ Foliot bergère and armchair from from apartment no. 11 at Bellevue. These two chairs (inv. VMB 14599 and VMB 14600) are kept at the Château de Versailles, where we recently discovered the number in ink on the wood: Du N°. 11 du château de Bellevue, and corresponding to the 1763 inventory.
