Bibliography: Benedict Nicolson, 1974, fig. 65; Benedict Nicolson, Luisa Vertova, Caravaggism in Europe, Turin, 1990, vol.1, p. 87, no. 885 as Master L, vol.2, fig. 884 The composition of our canvas canvas was known to Nicolson in the form of four variations located in the middle of Trophime Bigot; in Brussels in the private Drossaert collection; in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon; and in Bassano del Grappa (Italy) in a private collection, following the Farsseti sale sale at the Prato. He attributes our painting to a convention master, "Master L". Nicolson situates the activity of this painter in the French province between Burgundy and Provence, citing the names of Quentin, Tassel and Bigot. The reappearance in 2010 of a prototype of an identical composition by Gerrit Van Honthorst (lot no. 25, Property from the Portland Collection, December 7, 2010) completes this dossier (Gianni, Pappi, Gherardo delle Notti, Quadri bizzarrissimi e cene allegre, Editions Giunti, Florence, 2015. pp. 168.
