Lorenzo FASOLO (Pavia, c. 1463 - Genoa, 1518) - Lot 3
Lorenzo FASOLO (Pavia, c. 1463 - Genoa, 1518)
The Virgin and Child
Canvas.
Old restorations.
77 x 75 cm
Unframed.
We thank Professor Marco Tanzi for proposing this attribution to Lorenzo Fasolo, based on a digital photograph, on January 16, 2025.
Originally from Pavia, Lorenzo Fasolo divided his early career between his native city and Milan, where he was influenced by his Lombard counterparts (Bergognone, Zenale).
First mentioned in Genoa in 1495, he settled there in 1498. Two signed and dated works have come down to us: the Deploration over the Dead Christ of 1506 (Chiavari, Church of San Bernardino) and the Family of the Virgin of 1513 (Paris, Musée du Louvre) from the Church of San Giacomo in Savona. Our Madonna may be a fragment of a banner painted on canvas, rather than on panel, a more common support at the time.
