Attributed to Pier Paolo BONZI, known as Il Gobbo dei Carrac - Lot 7
Attributed to Pier Paolo BONZI, known as Il Gobbo dei Carracci (Cortona 1576 - Rome 1636) Mercury, Hersé and Aglaure Canvas. 91 x 139 cm The subject is taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses (Book II, 721-760), when Hersé and Aglaure carry flowers to the temple of Minerva, while Mercury observes them and falls in love with the former. The temple is inspired by the one in Tivoli, and the procession of Minerva's worshippers is based on the iconography of Roman sarcophagi.
