Claude VIGNON (1593-1670) and his workshop - Lot 16
Claude VIGNON (1593-1670) and his workshop Adoration of the Magi Curved canvas. Damage and missing parts. 215 x 132 cm The composition and style of this altarpiece belong to the world of Claude Vignon, without being a direct reproduction of one of his paintings on this subject. Among these are those in the church of Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais in Paris (1625), in the Musée des Beaux-Arts et d'Archéologie in Besançon (circa 1630), and several Adoration of the Magi, now lost, are mentioned under his name in 17th and 18th century inventories (Paola Pacht Bassani, Claude Vignon (1593-1670), Arthena, 1992, p.554 and p.555). Our canvas is probably a work painted in his studio during the 1630s-1640s. We cannot rule out the possibility that the master participated or retouched certain parts, especially on the left-hand side, where we find his luminist, lifted touch, in the landscape, the rich, fancy oriental costumes or the vase on the floor.
