Portrait of a seated lady, Memento mori
Canvas.
64 x 54 cm
Carel de Moor, the son of an art dealer, was introduced to the fine Leyden Fijnschilders style by his masters Gérard Dou, Frans van Mieris, Gotfried Schalcken and Abraham van den Tempel, characterized by a smooth pictorial surface with no visible brushstrokes, in the service of a highly accurate rendering of reality.
The model is seated on a carved walnut English caned armchair. Her garment is held in place by an ornate silversmith's belt. On either side of him, a skull holding a letter inscribed Memento Mori and a pocket watch, symbols of the passage of time, stand out; to his left, an opening opens onto a garden landscape with a terrace adorned with two stone lions, above a body of water.
Our painting is similar to the Portrait of Maria Boreel (private collection, Netherlands), the Portrait of Sara Maria de Goijer and its counterpart, the Portrait of Remees Florisz van Zanen (private collection, Netherlands), Portrait of Adriana Maria van Groenendijk (private collection, Netherlands): the artist liked to animate his portraits with a gesture or hand movement, engaging in a dialogue with the viewer.
