Augustin HANICOTTE (1870-1957) - Lot 49
Augustin HANICOTTE (1870-1957) Springtime Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. Restoration. 159 x 284.5 cm Augustin Hanicotte studied at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was a pupil of Fernand Cormon in 1891. A member of Les Artistes français from 1901, he exhibited there from 1900 to 1910. A friend of Henri Matisse, his compatriot from northern France, they spent time together in Brittany in 1895-96. In 1899, he visited the Dutch port of Volendam, where he met his future wife. Hanicotte moved to the Catalan coast for health reasons, to Collioure, where he took over Matisse's studio and ended his days in Narbonne. Augustin Hanicotte repeatedly painted very large canvases depicting village scenes, such as La Kermesse (185 x 355 cm) in the Musée d'Orsay collection. Numerous charcoal sketches, from the sale of the studio, show character studies that were used to create the painting Le Printemps.
