[Illuminated manuscript (fragment), 15th century.] Antiphonary lettering, Italy or Spain, late 15th century, on vellum, ink and pigments, 7.7 × 7.3 cm (lettering), 14.5 x 9.5 cm. on view, under glass and modern frame. Beautiful lettering "A" from an antiphonary on parchment. Letter traced in vermilion ink, surrounded by a fine decoration of palmettes, rinceaux and friezes of pearls treated as filigrees in blue ink, left in reserve on a background partially enhanced with gold powder. The surround features blue spirals, crosses and a Star of David. Italian or Spanish work from the late 15th century. Handwritten label on reverse indicating "Spain, XV th - XVI th century". A similar fragment, also from an antiphonary, is in the Victoria Albert Museum, London (ms. 1581).
