[Engraving]. HOLBEIN (Hans), MECHEL (Christian von). The Triumph of Death, engraved after Holbein's original drawings by Chrétien de Méchel... S.l., s.n., 1780 [i.e. Paris, Impr. S. Raçon, 1854]. Small square in-4 (14.5 x 12.5 cm. incl. binding), contemporary blond calf, 5-ribbed spine, brown title page, finely ornamented caissons, double gilt fillet bordering the boards and at the edges, interior lace, gilt edges, skilful restorations (foxing). A fine copy of this macabre suite of 47 steel-engraved plates, including a frontispiece and a double plate, each with a commentary opposite. Provenance: Francisque Sarcey (1827-1899), journalist and drama critic (engraved bookplate printed on vellum bound at the beginning of the volume).
