[Post-incunabula]. [MEHMED II (Ottoman Sultan); LAUDIVIUS]. - Lot 70
[Post-incunabula]. [MEHMED II (Ottoman Sultan); LAUDIVIUS]. Epistole Maumetis Turcaru[m] imperatoris elegantissime, multa prudentia acrimoniacque referte. [On the colophon]: Impressum Liptzk per Iacobu[m] Thanner, 1514. In-4 (approx. 18 x 14 cm.), [20] f. (signs. A-B6, C-D4), old muted boards (boards worn and faded; 2 f. loosened; short margins with some titles cut off at head of page). Rare edition of this collection of apocryphal letters of the Ottoman sultan Mehmed II, composed by the Italian litterateur Laudivius, active from 1450 until c. 1475. This historical-literary deception, which first appeared in 1473, was the subject of several incunabula and other editions during the 16th century.
An interesting copy, distinguished by the abundant annotation it received at the time: the title page, its verso, and the 21 pages that follow - the bulk of the volume - feature dense, meticulous notes, both between the typographed lines and in the margins (some reduced by the binder) (USTC 651788).
