In-8, [48] f., figs, paperback, modest 19th c. paper cover (spine cover incomplete; scattered light soiling and stains, not serious; trimmed short at head, qq. ornaments reduced). Extremely rare copy of this singular devotional work, a sort of collection of Christian calligrams, consisting of a suite of original typographical compositions, on the front leaves only, some printed in red and black, some including woodcut vignettes. We have located only two copies in public collections, both dated 1661, one in the Newberry Library in Chicago, the other in the Bibliothèque de Blois. Both consist of 85 leaves, including copper-engraved plates, so we believe that our copy, which contains no such plates, contains only the typographical part. On the other hand, it is distinguished by the date 1658 on the title page; however, at the end of the volume, on a plate in the form of a dedication to the Duchess of Orleans, we find the address of Jules Hotot and the date 1661.
