S.l., s.n., 1707. In-4, [4] f., 204 p., [10] f. (table, errata), [sign. ã4, A-Z4, Aa-Bb4, Cc2, Dd-Ee4, Ff2], contemporary glazed havana calf, 5-ribbed spine, ornate boards, gilt roulette at the edges (worn binding with multiple flaws; qq. ff. unbound; qq. very moderate soiling, one corner mq. in margin p.87, Extremely rare first edition of this famous treatise, in first state (p.16 the value of the septier is indicated as 170 livres and not 240). The work was printed clandestinely in Rouen, at the author's expense, and he himself smuggled the entire edition into Paris, intending to distribute it to influential figures. Two rulings by the King's Council on February 14 and March 14, 1707, ordered all copies to be seized and scrapped. The print run was limited to 276 copies, and the edition is illustrated with woodcut banderols, initials and culs-de-lampe, as well as tables in the text. The missing folding table is included in a recent photocopy based on the BnF copy. Provenance: F. Boullenot, priest, 1725; then prieuré Saint-Bernard de Monte Regalianno (?), 1754 (handwritten bookplates on title). (In French in the text 134; Goldsmiths 4431; Kress 2583).
