SAURIN (Jacques) ; ROQUES (Pierre) ; BEAUSOBRE (C.-L. de). D - Lot 149
SAURIN (Jacques) ; ROQUES (Pierre) ; BEAUSOBRE (C.-L. de). Discours historiques, critiques, theologiques, et moraux sur les evenemens les plus memorables du Vieux et du Nouveau Testament... A La Haye, chez P. de Hondt, 1728-1739. 6 volumes in-folio, 18th c. red morocco, spines with 6 nerves, green title and tomaison parts, decorated caissons with small irons, gilded lace bordering the boards, double gilded fillet on the necks, interior roulette, gilded edges on marbling (qq. frott...), Beautiful work remarkably served by its illustration entirely engraved on copper, which consists of 2 frontispieces, 6 fleurons repeated in the titles, 3 dedication vignettes, and 212 plates, after drawings by B. Picart, G. Hoët, Bourdon, Carrache, Champagne, Le Brun, Raphaël and other painters. This is an exceptional copy: it belonged to Marie-Caroline de Bourbon-Siciles (1798/1870), Duchess of Berry. It is printed on the highest quality paper intended by the publisher, referred to in the title of each volume as "super roial paper". The margins are large (h = 450 mm.). This copy is most probably the one cited by Cohen "en maroquin, 450 fr., vente de la duchesse de Berry". Provenance: Duchesse de Berry (engraved armorial bookplate bearing the inscription "Bibliothèque de Rosny"); then large 19th c. bookplate with the arms of Douglas-Hamilton for a Duke of Hamilton and Brandon (Scotland) (Brunet, V, 150; Cohen, 940-941).
