HAMILTON (Antoine). Le Bélier, tale. [Histoire de Fleur d'É - Lot 85
HAMILTON (Antoine). Le Bélier, tale. [Histoire de Fleur d'Épine, tale. A Paris, chez J. F. Josse, 1730. Two works in one volume, in-12, [2] f., 330 p., [1] f. (approb) ; [2] f., 275 p., period brown granite calf, 5-ribbed spine, red morocco title-piece, ornate caissons, gilt fillet to sides and edges, red edges, minor restorations (small snags, including to headpieces; rare light soiling and russeting). A collection of two fantastic tales in first editions. "Solicited by Court ladies infatuated with the Thousand and One Nights, Antoine Hamilton derisively wrote three fairy tales, Le Bélier, Fleur d'épine and Les Quatre Facardins. Less lauded than the Mémoires du comte de Gramont, his tales are nonetheless delightful reading, where enchantment unfolds between the Orient and chivalry." (BnF). Gumuchian (Les livres de l'enfance, 2930), gives this glowing review of Fleur d'Epine: "... a delightful fairy tale, one of the masterpieces of the genre, and one of the best productions of this celebrated author." Provenance: Josy Mazodier (20th c. bookplate); another modern armorial bookplate.
