[LIQUES (David)]. Histoire de la vie de messire Philippes de - Lot 112
[LIQUES (David)]. Histoire de la vie de messire Philippes de Mornay, seigneur du Plessis-Marly, etc. A Leyde, chez B. & A. Elsevier, 1647. Fort in-4, [6] f., 732 p., [3 (of 4)] f. (table, errata), contemporary mottled havana calf, 5-ribbed spine, red morocco title-piece, ornate caissons, gilt roulette at the edges, speckled edges (minor flaws including repaired head-cap; discreet sporadic marginal flecking). First edition of this life of Philippes Duplessis-Mornay (1549-1623), a great figure of French Protestantism, captain, diplomat, man of letters and theologian, who was nicknamed the "Pope of the Huguenots" and who was above all a learned gentleman, actor and witness of his time. This life is written by David Licques, based on Madame de Mornay's manuscript, up to the year 1606, and for the last 17 years (until 1623), on information provided by Jean Daillé and by Jules de Meslay and René Chalopin, Du Plessis-Mornay's secretaries. Old ms. biblio. note on one endpaper, last blank not preserved. (Hauser, Les sources, n°1460, 1485; Willems, 619).
