Set of two handkerchiefs: one bearing the effigy of "Wilhelm - Lot 35
Set of two handkerchiefs: one bearing the effigy of "Wilhelm I., König von Preußen, deutscher Kaiser" - Wilhelm I. King of Prussia, German Emperor (1797 - 1888), the other adorned with nine medallions depicting the exploits of Jacques, nicknamed "Va de bon coeur" ("Go with good heart").
These printed handkerchiefs, a Rouen specialty notably associated with the workshop of engraver-printmaker Narcisse-Alexandre Buquet (1825-1894), formed a category of popular imagery in which a textile was printed on a block and sometimes (as here) enriched with woodblock colors.
(Some stains and foxing).
Dimensions: 76 x 71 cm - 63 x 69 cm.
