Lisbeth BUONANNO (born in 1961) - Lot 38
Lisbeth BUONANNO (born in 1961) The Forbidden Notebook "The Secret Notebooks" series, 2023 Oil, ballpoint pen, tempera, pigments 30 x 30 x 1.8 cm "The Secret Notebooks" is a work depicting a gisaeng sitting on the floor and trying to hide a notebook. During the Joseon period and the Yi dynasty, gisaeng were talented artists skilled in music, poetry, and dance. They served a role somewhat similar to that of geishas in Japan. Their duty was to entertain upper-class men. They often played an important role in the relationships between men of power and the Emperor’s inner circle. The artist is drawn to the enigmatic and secretive nature of these unique women. Their forbidden or secret journals lend their role an even more mysterious character. Lisbeth Buonanno’s exploration revolves around a central theme: capturing a moment in life. Set against urban backdrops and in hushed atmospheres, where imposing machines coexist with the vintage and the futuristic, her characters move through intimate, hidden-away miniature theaters. She exhibits in Paris, throughout Europe, and also in Asia (China, Vietnam, Singapore). Value: €750 DONATED BY THE ARTIST
