(Women - Feminism) - 8 works - [BOUDIER de VILLEMERT]. El Amigo de las Mugeres. Translated from French into Spanish by D. Francisco Mariano Nipho. Madrid, Gabriel Ramirez, 1763. In-16, [8 ff], 213 pp, [1 f] title page, old rose sheepskin, smooth spine and covers decorated with gilt flowers, hinges slightly rubbed, gilt edges (contemporary Spanish binding). A very loose translation of Boudier de Villemert’s *L’Ami des femmes*, though its misogynistic sentiment is evident. A rare book. - ERDMANN (Axel). *My Gracious Silence: Women in the Mirror of 16th-Century Printing in Western Europe*. Lucerne, 1999. In-4, publisher’s binding. - BERRIOT-SALVADORE (Évelyne). *Women in French Renaissance Society*. Geneva, Droz, 1990. In-8, paperback, 592 pp. - COURCELLES (Dominique de) and Carmen VAL-JULIAN. Women and Books: France and Spain, 14th–17th Centuries. Paris, 1999. In-8, paperback. - MILL (John Stuart). The Subjection of Women. Paris, Guillaumin, 1869. In-12, paperback. Original French edition. An important essay. "The social relations between the two sexes that subordinate one sex to the other in the name of the law are inherently wrong and today constitute one of the principal obstacles to the progress of humanity; I believe they must give way to perfect equality, with no privilege or power for one sex, nor incapacity for the other.” - SHAW (Bernard). A Guide for the Intelligent Woman in the Age of Socialism and Capitalism. Paris, Montaigne, 1929. In-8, paperback. First French edition. 1/278 numbered copies on tinted alfa paper. Written for Shaw’s sister-in-law, Mary Stewart Cholmondeley—the “intelligent woman” who had asked him to explain “in a few words” what socialism was—this substantial volume was first published in London in 1928. In it, Shaw delivered a passionate defense of feminism, attributing much of the ills of modern societies to the unjust inequality between the sexes and the “dispossession” of women. In 1937, he published a revised and expanded version under the title *The Intelligent Woman’s Guide to Socialism, Capitalism, Sovietism, and Fascism*, which has never been published in France. - LEROY-BEAULIEU (Paul). Women’s Work in the 19th Century. Paris, Charpentier, 1873. In-12, blue half-calf, smooth spine decorated with gilded scrollwork, edges rubbed. [4 ff.], 464 pp. - CASALENA (Maria Pia). *Scritti Storici di donne italiane. Bibliographia 1800–1945*. Olschki, 2003. In-8, paperback. XCVII, 405 pp., [3 ff.].
