[Civil Engineering]. EXPLANATION OF THE WORKS undertaken for - Lot 24
[Civil Engineering]. EXPLANATION OF THE WORKS undertaken for the construction of the Tonnelle, or Underpass beneath the Thames, between Rotherhithe and Wapping, for the purpose of establishing a permanent connection between the two banks of the river. London, Warrington, 1836. Small oblong in-12 (approx. 10 x 13.5 cm), paperback (slightly foxed, slight stains). Very rare first edition of this French-language account of the construction of the Thames Tunnel in London, the first known tunnel built under a navigable river. It consists of 24 pages, including the title page, and 9 plates, 3 of which are fold-outs and one of which is a schematic diagram. The Thames Tunnel, one of the most innovative engineering achievements of the first half of the 19th century, was constructed between 1825 and 1842 according to the plans of Sir Marc Isambert Brunel (1769–1849), engineer, architect, and Franco-British inventor. The plates show panoramas, cross-sections, and detailed views of the tunnel.
