JACOB (P.L., Bibliophile, pseudonym of Paul Lacroix). Essay - Lot 30
JACOB (P.L., Bibliophile, pseudonym of Paul Lacroix). Essay on Millevoye. Paris, Quantin, 1880. In-12, LVI pp. (including a blank first folio), [2] facsimile pages, period midnight blue half-shagreen binding, smooth spine, author’s name, title, fleurons, and gilt fillets (worn cap bands, worn corners, one inner hinge split). A very rare volume, printed in a run of only 25 copies intended for the author’s friends. Paul Lacroix published a new edition of Millevoye’s works with Quantin in 1880, preceded by a note on the poet by Charles Louandre. The text presented here was likely not selected for that edition, and Lacroix had this private print run produced. There are five known copies in French public collections: three at the BnF (including one bearing an autograph inscription by the author to a certain Gustave Rabattel), one in Lyon, and a final copy at the Amiens Departmental Archives bearing an inscription to a “Monsieur Gonse.” And two copies in the United States (University of Illinois and University of Florida). A copy presented by the author, with a signed autograph dedication, to the Breton novelist and illustrator Max Radiguet (1816–1899). Accompanied by two signed autograph letters from Paul Lacroix, addressed to the same recipient in Brest in June and July 1881 (4 pages, in-8), in which he discusses this note in particular, as well as other bibliographic topics.
