[Denmark]. WORM (Ole). Fasti danici, universam tempora compu - Lot 49
[Denmark]. WORM (Ole). Fasti danici, universam tempora computandi rationem antiquitus in Dania et vicinis regionibus observatam libris tribus exhibentes, ex variis patriae antiquitatibus et autoribus fide dignis eruti... Hafniae, apud J. Moltkenium, 1643. In-folio (27.5 x 17.5 cm.), [8] f. (including gr. title), 191 p., [4] f. (index, errata), contemporary ivory vellum, smooth spine (vellum washed, minor soiling on upper cover, a few browned pages, very light dampening in margins, tear with trace of adhesive in margin p.143). Rare third enlarged edition of this important study of a medieval runic calendar, which originally appeared in 1626. The present edition contains a longer text and five additional illustrations, including a full-page image of a runic calendar carved in bone. Danish naturalist and collector, personal physician to King Christian IV, Ole Worm (1588-1654) was undoubtedly the most brilliant precursor of studies on runes and ancient Scandinavian culture. The illustration features an allegorical title and a portrait of the author on v° of folio b2, both copper-engraved by the Flemish artist Simon van de Passe de Oude (1595-1647); 18 engraved figures in the text of various sizes, 6 of which are copper-engraved, the others wood-engraved. The work also includes several tables; pages 125 to 158 are printed in red and black, and include a calendar illustrated with figures: Sign. a-b 4, A-Z 4, Aa-Bb 4 (Brunet V, 1477).
