Alfons MUCHA (1860–1939); Henri JOFFROY (engraver). [Self-Po - Lot 184
Alfons MUCHA (1860–1939); Henri JOFFROY (engraver). [Self-Portrait in a Russian Shirt; untitled]. 1897. Woodcut, image size approximately 15 x 12 cm. (sheet approx. 32.5 x 25 cm, slight browning along the margins). A fine print from this plate, based on a drawing by Alfons Mucha that evokes his famous “Self-Portrait in a Russian Shirt,” woodcut by Henri Joffroy (1842–?), a student of Yon and Perrichon. Printed on paper that appears to be a fine pearlescent Japanese paper. Mucha’s signature on the print, “Mucha 97,” and an autograph signature in pencil in the lower right corner of the figure. Autograph inscription signed by Alfons Mucha, in pencil: “To my dearest friend, / Mr. Charles Masson / With all my heart” (an “e” at the end of the word “cher” has been erased) / signature / Paris, August 12, 1897.” This extremely rare plate is strictly contemporary with the publication of one of Mucha’s most beautiful illustrated works, *Ilsée, Princess of Tripoli* (1897), by Editions d’Art H. Piazza in Paris. The art publisher Charles Masson was working with Henri Piazza at the time, and this print appears to have been a gift from the artist in gratitude for their collaborative work on this book. Provenance: Charles Masson (1858–1931), by descent.
