ROBERT de VAUGONDY (Gilles). The Duchy of Savoy, comprising - Lot 22
ROBERT de VAUGONDY (Gilles). The Duchy of Savoy, comprising the Chablais, the Fossigny, the Génevois, Savoy proper, the Tarentaise, and the Maurienne. 1751. Two sheets joined together, with a central fold for the copperplate-engraved map printed in black and enhanced with color. Scale. (Adhesive tape along the edges, small tears and stains in the margins) Outside margins: 49.5 x 53.5 cm Gilles and his son Didier ROBERT DE VAUGONDY, geographers to the King, were descended from a line of cartographers whose career began in the early 17th century and remained active into the late 18th century. Their work is on par with that of their illustrious ancestor Nicolas Sanson d’Abbeville, who had revolutionized French cartography as early as the first half of the 17th century. This map was drawn based on Giovanni Tommaso Borgonio’s map of Piedmont; in the 17th century, Borgonio was the preeminent Piedmontese illustrator of Savoy, where he resided between 1672 and 1675. It is of interest for its detailed depiction of the Aosta Valley.
