A Burgundian library - Part 1.

Sale on Saturday, November 29, 2025: objects in the morning, books in the afternoon.

This important library, assembled by two generations of erudite collectors, illustrates the many aspects of Burgundy. History, geography, illustrious figures, culture and tradition are all evoked in this fine collection of books and documents, both ancient and modern.

The collection includes classic books on the region, general history and local monographs, several collections of customary law, and works by authors who originated or lived in Burgundy. Highlights include the first edition of Guillaume Paradin's Annales de Bourgogne (1566), L'origine des " Bourgongnons " by Pierre de Saint-Julien (1581), L'histoire de Saint-Etienne de Dijon (1696), L'Histoire de la prise d'Auxerre by Abbé Lebeuf (1723), and the genealogies of the houses of Clugny (1737) and Chastellux (1869).

Archives and manuscripts include a remarkable set of Comptes de l'administration des bois du roi, maîtrise d'Avallon, from 1778 to 1791, the judicial register of the barony of Anstrude (1773-1777), a collection of plays performed at Château d'Anstrude in 1799, several winegrowers' diaries and other unpublished documents on winegrowing in the late 18th and early 19th centuries; works by local scholars, including several autograph manuscripts by Abbé Duru, and the works of Abbés Poulaine (geology) and Patriat (archaeology).

The library itself is supplemented and enriched by various items on sheets, also relating to Burgundy: engravings, maps and plans, drawings. These include an important set of original drawings by Guillon, and a collection of washes by Reynaud.
