Jean Marc NATTIER (1685-1766) Portrait of... - Lot 34 - Daguerre
Jean Marc NATTIER (1685-1766) Portrait of Marc Pierre de Voyer de Paulmy, Count of Argenson (1696-1764) Canvas. Old restorations. 136 x 104 cm Gilded wood frame, French work of the Louis XIV period. Provenance : formerly at the château des Ormes until 1900 ; collection of the marquise d'Argenson ; by inheritance to the marquis de Goulaine, his grandson, then by descent, château de Goulaine. Our painting is the counterpart of the Portrait of Madame la comtesse d'Argenson painted by Nattier in 1743 (private collection (private collection, Salmon 1999, N°38) although executed a little later since the battle of Fontenoy whose plans are represented on the engraving that the minister holds, took place in 1745. Our painting is probably the one exhibited by the artist at the Salon of 1750. A copy of this painting was sold in Chartres (Ivoire, March 31, 2019, n° 55) as the workshop of Jean-Marc Nattier, and another one, attributed to Marianne Loir, in Munich (Hampel, December 11, 2014, no. 604, Portrait d'un chevalier de l'ordre de Saint Louis).
